I'm at my wits end here. Stripe has been holding $15,247 of MY money in a "rolling reserve" for 3 months now. My ecommerce business sells custom furniture - been processing with them for 2 years with zero chargebacks.

Out of nowhere in September they emailed saying they were implementing a 10% rolling reserve due to "elevated risk" - no specifics, no warning, nothing. Now its December and they still wont tell me when the money gets released.

I've emailed support probably 15 times. Every response is the same copy-paste BS about how reserves "protect both parties" and they'll "review periodically." Called their phone number twice - both times the rep just read from the same script.

Questions for anyone whos been thru this:

Switched to Helcim 4 months ago after reading this thread. Quick update for anyone considering:

Pros:

No reserve (yet) despite processing similar volume to what I did on Stripe
Interchange-plus pricing saves me about $400/month on fees
Actual humans answer support within minutes
They call ME to check in on my account periodically

Cons:

Dashboard isn't as pretty as Stripe
API documentation not as good (matters if you're a developer)
No Stripe Radar equivalent for fraud detection

For most small businesses, Helcim is just better. Stripe is built for startups that want to IPO - not for normal businesses that just want to accept payments.

My Stripe reserve ($14K) released fully last week, exactly 120 days after my last transaction with them.

UK Stripe account here. Anyone else dealing with reserves on Stripe UK vs US accounts?

I have TWO Stripe accounts - one for my UK Ltd company and one for a US LLC. Same business model (SaaS tool), same product, same pricing. UK account processes about £45K/month, US account does $60K/month.

Stripe UK put a 10% reserve on my account. Stripe US has no reserve. When I asked why, they said "different risk models for different regions." That's insane. It's the SAME business!

Full disclosure: I work for Helcim (payment processor). Not trying to spam, but I see a lot of frustration in this thread and wanted to share how we handle reserves differently.

At Helcim we only implement reserves on about 2% of merchants vs industry average of 15-20%. Our criteria:

Chargeback rate above 1.5% for 3+ consecutive months
Sudden volume spike over 500% month-over-month with no advance notice
High-risk MCC codes with no processing history (adult, cannabis, crypto)

Even when we do implement a reserve, it's typically 5% (not 15-25% like I'm seeing here), and we provide a written explanation with specific metrics and a clear path to removal.

We also pay interest on reserves over $10K at the current Fed Funds rate minus 1%. Not much, but better than nothing.

If anyone wants to talk about migrating, my DMs are open. I'm not paid on commission so I'm not going to pressure anyone, just offering an alternative.

The new 2026 Stripe terms (effective Jan 15) also added this clause that everyone should be aware of:

"If your account is subject to a rolling reserve, Stripe may convert the rolling reserve to a fixed reserve or upfront reserve at any time without notice."

Translation: They can change the TYPE of reserve on you without warning. Rolling reserve means they hold a percentage and release it on a schedule. Fixed reserve means they hold a lump sum amount. Upfront reserve means you have to DEPOSIT money with them before processing.

This is significant because if they convert your rolling reserve to an upfront reserve, they can demand you deposit $50K or whatever before you can process. That's basically account termination for most small businesses.

I haven't seen them actually DO this yet, but the fact that it's in the terms means they CAN. Be aware.
